Emirates Leads Global Safety Push– Ban Power Bank
From October 1, 2025, Emirates Airlines will completely ban the in-flight use of power bank and all external power sources. The rule applies to every passenger, regardless of the power bank’s size or brand.

Passengers can still carry one power bank of up to 100 Wh in their hand luggage, but:
- It cannot be used to charge phones, laptops, or any device during the flight.
- It must be stored under the seat or in the seat pocket—not in the overhead bins.
- Power banks remain prohibited in checked baggage.

This move puts Emirates at the forefront of a growing list of airlines tightening safety rules on lithium-ion battery devices.
Why the Ban? Safety Risks from Lithium Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries in power banks pose a thermal runaway risk—if damaged or overcharged, they can overheat and explode. Fires in flight are especially dangerous because they spread quickly in a confined cabin.
Triggered by Real Incidents
The strict stance follows multiple accidents, including a January 14, 2024 incident on a flight in Taiwan where a power bank exploded mid-air:
- Two passengers suffered severe burns.
- Fire damaged nearby seats and panels.
- The explosion happened while the power bank was charging unattended.
Footage of the Taiwan incident went viral, pushing many airlines to reassess their safety protocols.
Other Airlines Following Suit
Several carriers have already taken similar measures:
- Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Thai Airways – No in-flight use or charging of power banks.
- Wawa Airways (Taiwan) – Total ban on any power bank use since March 2025, regardless of size.
- Korean Air, Saudi Airlines, Flynas, Al Jazeera Airways, Oman Air, Kuwait Airways, IndiGo, Air India – Enforce carry-on only rules and ban in checked baggage.
What Passengers Should Remember When Flying Emirates
- Allowed to carry: 1 power bank under 100 Wh in hand luggage.
- Not allowed: Using it to charge devices during flight.
- Storage: Keep under seat or in seat pocket, not in overhead bin.
- Never place power banks in checked baggage.
Bottom Line
Emirates is taking no chances with passenger safety. From October 1, travelers will need to rely on aircraft charging ports or personal device batteries for the entire journey—power banks will be for carry only, not for use.
