On January 29, 2025, American Airlines Flight 5342, was one of the darkest days in the modern US aviation world. That day a disaster shocked the aviation world when a Bombardier CRJ-700 regional jet collided mid-air with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River. According to the NTSB’s preliminary report, the CRT 700 was on its final approach to runway 33 when a black Hawk, operating at an unusually low altitude, crossed its flight path and, in a few seconds, both aircraft collided about 300 feet above the Potomac River.

  • Faulty helicopter altimeter readings may have misled the Army pilots about their altitude.

American Airlines also retired the flight number 5342, reassigning the Wichita–D.C. route to AA5677 out of respect for the victims.
