A big accident was averted today at Mumbai airport. A plane Bombardier Q400 SpiceJet landed at this airport whose one tire had fallen off at Kandla airport during take off. It was a Spice Jet plane. After take off, the wheel of this plane fell off, and it landed at Mumbai airport.

The pilot was informed about this because this landing was going to be very tough and difficult. Therefore, all efforts were made at Mumbai airport. The fire brigade and rescue teams were called. All these teams were present along the runway and when the plane landed, the pilots’ presence of mind needed to be appreciated so that after understanding and sensing the entire situation, they tried to land in such a manner that did not exert too much force.

Investigation Underway

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will launch a detailed probe into how the tire detached. SpiceJet has not yet released an official statement, but sources suggest the aircraft will be taken out of service for inspection.

This incident adds to the list of recent safety concerns faced by Indian carriers, highlighting the importance of stringent maintenance checks to ensure passenger safety.

Past similar SpiceJet / Indian examples

  • The 2019 Goa incident (SG-3568) is very similar: nose gear didn’t deploy (amber light stayed on), pilot did go-around, then landed safely. Gear eventually came down. So that was not a full “no-gear” landing.
  • In the recent Kandla → Mumbai case, a wheel detached during takeoff, but other wheels were intact and landing gear substantially usable, so they could still land safely.
