Breaking news is coming in from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, where chaos unfolded at Terminal 3, Gate 48, after an Air India flight bound for Kolkata allegedly cancelled more than 15 confirmed passenger tickets to accommodate airline crew members. The incident triggered outrage among passengers who had reportedly been waiting for nearly eight hours without any clear communication from the airline.

According to passengers present at the airport, the disruption began when boarding for the Delhi–Kolkata flight was repeatedly delayed. Despite hours of waiting, passengers claim they were not informed about any cancellation or overbooking issue. The situation escalated when several travelers were suddenly told that their tickets had been cancelled to make space for Air India crew members.

Some affected passengers alleged that boarding passes for crew were issued hours before passenger boarding, raising serious questions about flight planning and crew scheduling. The decision reportedly left more than 15 passengers stranded at the last moment, including individuals traveling due to medical emergencies, who were left distressed and without immediate alternatives.

As tempers flared at the boarding gate, angry passengers confronted airline staff, demanding answers and boarding clearance. Eyewitnesses said the situation became tense, prompting Air India staff to call security personnel to manage the crowd and prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control.

Speaking on the incident, aviation correspondent Ahmed Bhardwaj explained that airlines typically claim to inform passengers in advance about cancellations or rescheduling. Air India, in previous instances, has maintained that it contacts passengers individually through calls and messages. However, in this case, the anger expressed at the terminal suggests a serious communication failure. As of now, Air India’s official response to this specific incident is awaited.

The incident comes amid a particularly difficult period for aviation operations in North India. On the previous day alone, Delhi Airport witnessed over 130 departure cancellations and more than 90 arrival cancellations, pushing total disruptions past 220 flights. Adverse weather conditions and IMD forecasts for December 16 had already prompted several airlines, including Air India, to cancel or reschedule select flights.

This latest episode adds to growing concerns over passenger handling, transparency, and operational planning in the aviation sector, especially at one of the country’s busiest airports. Authorities and airline officials are expected to closely review the incident as passenger confidence continues to be tested amid repeated disruptions.
