The IndiGo flight had a tail strike during go around. That is, the rear part of the plane hit the runway. The visibility of the runway decreased to less than 2000 meters amid heavy rains in Mumbai. IndiGo’s A321 was going around when its tail collided with the runway. The passengers and crew on the plane remained safe. But the plane was damaged and was grounded. Its repair and investigation is now underway at Mumbai airport. DGCA has immediately started an investigation and the plane has been removed from service.

IndiGo said that they will take more safety steps but aviation experts say that the frequent trail strikes show a lack of training and operational procedures of IndiGo. Going around is especially challenging in bad weather and questions are being raised about training regarding this.

Questions are also raised on the condition of the runway and operational preparedness during monsoon at a big airport like Mumbai.

The long fuse large design of A321 can also cause tail strike. DGCA’s investigation will reveal whether this incident happened due to pilot error, weather or plane handling. Seven tail strikes in the last 2 years are a warning for IndiGo. Grounded PTICM and frequent accidents indicate that it is necessary to strengthen safety during monsoon. So this incident has become a challenge for both IndiGo and DGCA.

Maintaining the trust of passengers, safe operations in bad weather and improving pilot training have now become priorities. Ensuring safety in A321 flights and preventing tail strikes in future will now be the company’s biggest challenge.
