United Express Flight Plunges Nearly 4,000 Feet — 2 Seriously Injured

What Happened

On August 28, 2025, SkyWest flight 5971, operating as United Express, encountered severe turbulence about 90 minutes into its  journey from Aspen, Colorado to Houston. 

The Embraer E175  fleet dropped  roughly  4,000  bases in  less than 60 seconds, followed by a  further descent of more than  25,000  bases over the coming six minutes . 

The  aviators declared a squawk 7700 emergency and diverted to Austin- Bergstrom International Airport where a safe landing was executed with medical  assistance ready.

 Injuries & Passenger Response

Two adult passengers sustained serious but non-life-threatening — injuries and were transported to local hospitals. 

All 39 passengers and four crew members were  assessed by EMS upon arrival.

The FAA  verified the aircraft endured both pressurization issues and extreme turbulence, and has launched an investigation.
