Australia’s 1st Orbital Rocket ‘Eris’ by Gilmour Space Fails During Historic Debut Launch

Australia’s first orbital rocket, ERIS 1, crashed just 14 seconds after liftoff.

Since 1971, it was the first orbital attempt, which was going to create a historic moment. However, the mission did not proceed as planned.

The event took place at the Bowen orbital Spaceport located along the picturesque coast of Queensland. 

Reason for Rocket Fail

On 29th July, Tuesday morning at precisely 8:35 a.m. local time, Australia’s first entirely homegrown rocket initiated the launch of Eris1 by Gilmore Space Technologies.

The rocket reached an altitude of 82 feet, with its engines firing for a total of 23 seconds. However, just 14 seconds after breaking free from the launchpad, it faltered—veering sideways and ultimately crashing back to Earth. The impact raised a cloud of smoke, but notably, there was no explosion

The ERIS1 was not just a rocket. It was a symbol of national pride and innovation ambition.

It was capable of carrying up to 660 lbs of payload into low Earth orbit, with the aim of deployment of small communication satellites. 

Adam Gilmore, co-founder and CEO of Gilmore Space expressed hope, strength the achievement of the rocket’s brief flight as a monumental step for the Australian space industry, the company is already looking ahead to its next test flight.
